About the Club

MEET THE CLUB

The Wilkes-Barre “Breakers” Rugby Football Club began back in 1973. The Breakers got our name due to this region of the United States that we live and play rugby in. The Wyoming Valley region of Pennsylvania was at one time famous for mining coal. The Breakers adopted the heritage of this region and our colors are black and red. The black symbolizes the coal from the mines and the red stands for the blood of the miners who died in the mines. Our logo shows the skull of a miner with his hardhat on, and the crossed pickaxe and sledgehammer symbolize the tools of his trade. Like the miners before us, the club has upheld a strong tradition through hard work and dedication.

The Wilkes-Barre Breakers Rugby Club is located in Northeastern Pennsylvania, about 17 miles south of Scranton, and about 2 hours north of Philadelphia. Home matches are played at Kirby Park, Wilkes-Barre, just a few minutes off Exit 170B (Wilkes-Barre/Bear Creek) on Interstate 81. Directions to our pitch (and party!)

One of our main goals is to promote the great sport of rugby. Rugby is not like any other sport. It is the only sport where you get to punish the other team, and then make friends with them afterwards, over a brew of course. The social aspect of rugby is just as important as what happens on the pitch. The traditions that we uphold off the pitch are the same traditions practiced world wide. Rugby has been referred to as the world’s largest fraternity.

We are always looking for new faces, no rugby experience necessary!!!
